Al Campos is the son of his late preacher father and a gospel singing mother.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA.
Al is a singer, trombone player, songwriter, producer and arranger. He performs in the genre of Soul, Smooth and Funky Jazz with deep roots in Gospel music.
Born and raised in the church, he has been singing Gospel songs since his early childhood. To this day he still sings Gospel music and teaches workshops to choirs and performs concerts all over Europe.
His life long friend and adopted uncle, Andraé Crouch as well as his twin sister, Sandra Crouch have been most responsible for Al's knowledge and inspiration within the Gospel genre. "I owe about 100% of what I know and love of this music to Andraé and Sandra. I've been extremely Blessed and lucky to have them in my life as a best friend, spiritual and musical teacher."
Most recently in April 2006 Al was invited by Andraé and Sandra to sing at their church, the New Christ Memorial Church in Pacoima, CA. "That was one of the only times in my life that I was nervous and scared to say Yes to an invitation to sing. As a matter of fact I said, 'Thanks but no thanks.' I did not feel prepared but they advised me to just let the Holy Spirit guide me. I was guided all right. I sang at the church at two separate services. I definitely overcame my fear and look forward to the next invitation."
It also helped to hear Pastor Andraé tell me afterwards, "You were sangin."
Al Campos was born and raised during what he calls, "the last of the great musical eras."
The late 1960's and early 70's, listening to Little Stevie Wonder (when he was still little!), Al Green, Bill Withers, Billy Paul, Smokie Robinson & the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, Diana Ross & the Supremes, WAR, the early Tower of Power, Chicago, Kool & the Gang, and the list just goes on and on.
In 1982 he then moved to San Francisco where he worked as a cleaning boy at Ashkenazie & Co. A Chinese Jade Art Dealer in the Fairmont Hotel. After 2 years of that he was promoted to an actual Jade salesman. He travelled about USA presenting collections of museum quality pieces to collectors nation wide. Asian art, specifically Jade sculpture is still to this day a huge passion.
In 1988 he met and married his Danish wife who was visiting San Francisco from Copenhagen. Two years later in April of 1990, after the 1989 earthquake, they both moved from San Francisco to Copenhagen, Denmark.
"In my opinion, the aftermath of that quake was the original Katrina disaster of my lifetime. By that I mean that it seemed hardly anybody was getting any help, relief, medical attention or shelter. There were tons of homeless people."
